You can probably remember a time when a person whom you perceived as important surprised you by using your name for the very first time. Many people consider their names to be their single most unique characteristic, one that defines them to everyone else within their environment. To establish a bond with each of your students, it is critical that you learn and use their names as early in the term as possible. This is easier said that done for most faculty members, particularly depending on whether you teach 30 in a class or 300+. Either way, make plans to start to learn students’ names.
